For Keith Waterfield, the Tough Ruck Marathon is a natural extension of a life built around service.

Keith has served in the military since July 1989, giving more than 36 years to supporting his country and fellow service members. Over the course of that journey, service has become more than a career – it has shaped his values, his purpose, and the way he looks for opportunities to give back.

That is one reason the Tough Ruck mission resonates so deeply with him.

For Keith, participating in Tough Ruck is a way to honor fallen military members while helping raise funds and awareness for military and first responder families. It is also personal in another important way. Running has long been one of the ways he relieves stress, stays grounded, and takes care of himself. Tough Ruck gives him the chance to connect that personal outlet to a cause that means so much to him.

After previously participating in 2019 and 2022, Keith is returning for the 2026 Tough Ruck Marathon with even more meaning behind every mile.

This year, his wife will be rucking alongside him. Together, they represent a family deeply connected to military life—Keith serves in the Army, while his wife serves in the Navy. Their shared commitment to service makes the Tough Ruck mission especially close to home.

“The military is our whole life,” Keith says. “We hope that the way we give back will one day end up helping us if we need it.”

For Keith, every step on the course is about honoring sacrifice, supporting the military community, and standing alongside others who understand both the pride and the weight of service.
