Tough Ruck Nation is standing with the family of Kyle Machado, United States Navy veteran and Taunton Firefighter who passed away on August 14, 2026, at the age of 28. In keeping with its mission to honor America’s fallen military members and first responders through action, Tough Ruck is providing Kyle’s family with a $13,000+ Family of the Fallen Hero’s Salute Grant to fully relieve the family of all funeral costs and provide additional immediate support to his wife, Megan, and their two children, Lucas and Elena.
Kyle dedicated much of his young life to serving others. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 2016 to 2024. He spent five years stationed at Naval Station Norfolk aboard the USS Mitscher, serving as an Operations Specialist. He later served in Key West, Florida, with Joint Interagency Task Force South as an Air Tactical Service Actions Officer and Staff Training Instructor.
After eight years of military service, Kyle and his family returned home to Massachusetts in 2024. He graduated from the Fall River Fire Academy in 2026 and continued his life of service when he joined the Taunton Fire Department on April 13. Although his time with the department was short, Kyle quickly became part of the close knit brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire service. According to the Machado family, Kyle died from suicide and the family is urging mental health awareness and normalizing seeking help. We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support, the tributes, and the incredible individuals who step up through Tough Ruck to ensure that the sacrifice of Firefighter Machado is never forgotten,” said Taunton Fire Chief Steven Lavigne. Members of Taunton Fire have participated in the Tough Ruck marathon in prior years. The marathon event takes place the day before Marathon Monday in Concord and is held in partnership with the Boston Athletic Association. Military Friends Foundation is the official charity of Tough Ruck Nation.
“Kyle answered the call to serve his country in the Navy and then continued that life of service as a firefighter protecting his community,” said Sarah Sweeney, Race Director, Tough Ruck. “At this unimaginable time, we want Megan, Lucas and Elena to know that the Tough Ruck community stands beside them. Providing this grant is one way we can help ease a burden for the family while honoring Kyle’s extraordinary commitment to service. Tough Ruckers will carry Kyle’s name and his memory forward, and we will make sure his service is never forgotten.”

To honor Kyle’s legacy, Tough Ruck – in partnership with the Machado/Charette Family and Taunton FD – invites the community to join us September for a virtual Tough Ruck Memorial March in his memory. With a $15 donation, ruckers will also receive a Tough Ruck Memorial Patch for Kyle and help bring additional support to Kyle’s wife and children.
