For Colleen and Patrick Dugan, the miles at Tough Ruck begin long before the starting line. Each step they take is rooted in family, memory, and a promise to honor someone they carry with them throughout the course.

The couple rucks in honor of Colleen’s brother, Sgt. Michael J. Kelley, who was killed in action on June 8, 2005 while serving in Afghanistan. His sacrifice is the reason they lace up, shoulder the weight, and take on the physical and emotional challenge each year.

Colleen completed her first Tough Ruck in 2025, stepping into an experience that already held meaning for her family. Patrick, who first participated in 2024 and returned again in 2025, has embraced the event alongside her – turning it into something they take on together, not just as individuals, but as a team.

Like many in the Tough Ruck community, their journey is rooted in honoring, remembering, and ensuring that stories like Michael’s are never forgotten. Each mile is a tribute. Each step is a way to carry forward his legacy.

In 2026, Patrick is taking that commitment even further. He will complete a “Double Unicorn,” rucking Tough Ruck on Sunday and then running the Boston Marathon the very next day – an extraordinary physical test that reflects the depth of his dedication.

Together, Colleen and Patrick represent what Tough Ruck is all about: resilience, remembrance, and the powerful bond between personal loss and collective purpose. Their participation is not just about finishing – it’s about honoring a hero and carrying his memory forward with every step.
